sciatica

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

The sciatic nerve is a major fiber in the body that extends from the lower part of the spine down to the back of the thigh. Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain describes the discomfort that an individual experiences from this nerve. Typically, the pain begins in the lower spine and radiates down the hips and back of one or both legs. However, it's very common for patients to only experience discomfort on one side of their body. If you are tired of suffering from sciatica, reach out to LA Pain and Performance.  We have a number of state-of-the-art facilities that are located near major metropolitan areas to offer convenient, quality pain management care. We look forward to discovering the right solution for you.

SYMPTOMS OF SCIATICA

The primary symptom of sciatica is pain that travels all the way down the sciatic nerve path, which starts from the low back down to the upper legs (thighs). However, this pain can also radiate as far down as the calf and toes. This kind of discomfort will vary from patient to patient and can be mild in nature or severe. Other possible symptoms of sciatica may include:

  • Discomfort in the buttocks and hips
  • Numbness or tingling in the low back and leg(s)
  • Muscle weakness in the affected area(s)
  • Difficulty moving the affected leg
  • Pain that worsens when sitting or standing

CAUSES OF SCIATICA

Sciatica is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, which is commonly a result of a herniated disc, damaged cartilage, a bony growth on the spine (osteophyte), and narrowing of the spine in the lower back (lumbar spinal stenosis). Patients who are overweight and practice a sedentary lifestyle are at higher risk of exacerbating their sciatica or developing lower back issues. Sciatic nerve irritation may also be caused by tumors, an infection in the lumbar spine, accident, or sports injury.

TREATMENTS FOR SCIATICA

In many cases, sciatic nerve pain can be improved with routine stretching and exercises that help relieve pressure on the nerve. When you visit one of our Inland Empire or HIgh Desert location, our team can show you different exercises that can help, but in most cases, we recommend walking and light lower back stretches. Over-the-counter painkillers and hot or cold compresses can also help alleviate your symptoms. If more invasive treatment is needed to bring the comfort you need, we can discuss all of your options during your private consultation. Each patient case is unique, which is why we will build a custom treatment plan that is suited for your condition and level of pain.
